HP Networking switches, with their integrated sFlow capability and InMon’s best-in-class traffic management solutions, give you visibility in to the traffic on your network. Now, the sFlow analysis capability also is integrated into the network, with the availability of Traffic Sentinel as a HP Networking integrated product.

Most HP Networking switches and wireless access points support sFlow. By using a central sFlow collector and analyzer, such as InMon’s Traffic Sentinel, customers can take full advantage of this capability. Enabling sFlow on every port in the network allows full visibility of network traffic.

InMon’s traffic management applications keep details of the network traffic and store months of historical data. This allows immediate network issues to be addressed, as well as allowing you to look back at historical usage. HP ProCurve Manager, the management platform, along with InMon Traffic Sentinel provide distinct capabilities in optimizing the network. ProCurve Manager provides device management, configuration management, device discovery, single pane of glass for security and device management, and other management functions.

Traffic Sentinel brings complementary capabilities for trouble shooting, security threat detection, capacity management, historical trend analysis, and performance optimization across a single campus or multi-site enterprise network. Traffic Sentinel include the following capabilities:

• Sophisticated reporting, data extraction and filtering allow you to address performance issues or suspected misuse as they happen.
• Automatic tracking of usage quotas – and rate limiting of traffic from users who exceed their quotas – ensures fair access to network resources, and that bandwidth is reserved for business critical applications.

• Traffic Sentinel is designed to monitor all ports across an entire network. The scalability of sFlow allows this universal monitoring to give complete visibility. Traffic Sentinel is able to monitor hundreds of switches and wireless access points, with all speeds of interface.
• In addition to supporting sFlow (from both wired and wireless devices), Traffic Sentinel can also integrate data from legacy network devices. Data sources include NetFlow, J-Flow, IPFIX, and polling SNMP counters. This allows you to grow a new network and monitor it with integrated visibility from other devices.
• Traffic Sentinel has an extensive historical data collection capability. Data is stored in a very efficient manner using a customizable database, which allows a history of months or years to be retained.
• The product offers a flexible and powerful querying, reporting and scripting capability. Many types of analysis can be performed using the queries and reports that are bundled with the product. But if a unique approach is required, other types of query can be created. An integrated JavaScript interpreter is included, which has direct access to the database, allowing queries to be made using an SQL-like syntax. The data can then be manipulated into the appropriate form for integrating with other applications, or creating custom network reports.
• Traffic Sentinel allows usage quotas for users to be established. It automatically applies controls that rate limit traffic from users who exceed their quotas, providing fair access to network resources and reserving bandwidth for business critical applications.
• Traffic Sentinel is available as a Linux based server application, and now as an HP Networking integrated application. As an HP Networking integrated application, it is fully integrated into the network infrastructure and can be managed directly by the network engineering staff. The application can be accessed via any browser. Also, access control ensures that only authorized staff can view the data.

• Gain visibility into all the network traffic, from core to the edge, wired and wireless. Without visibility into the specifics of the traffic, it is virtually impossible to manage the network effectively. InMon Traffic Sentinel gives easy to use, visibility of traffic, when coupled with an sFlow-enabled HP network.
• Manage the usage of the network, limiting inappropriate usage such as peer-peer, multimedia or file sharing and reserve bandwidth for business critical applications.
• Retain historical data to allow analysis of who was doing what, when and where at any point in time.
• Manage security threats to the network, from both internal and external sources. Quickly pinpoint the source of the threat, and identify potential damage that has been done. Security analysis is performed by identifying unusual patterns of network activity, and looking for suspicious signatures in packets. Traffic Sentinel is able to perform this continuous surveillance across the entire network, protecting against internal threats inside the firewall. Once a threat is identified, it is quickly located to allow mediating action to be taken. Further analysis of the traffic from that host can be used to ensure that other hosts remain safe.
• Use flexible and powerful custom queries to integrate results with third-party applications. Results of queries and reports can be integrated automatically into other applications, such as ProCurve Manager Plus, or reporting packages. This allows automated action to be taken to correct network performance, or the analysis from Traffic Sentinel to feed into other IT management systems – for example, data center control or billing systems.
• Sophisticated thresholds and alerts allow you to focus on the problem areas and quickly determine root cause.

• InMon Traffic Sentinel is sold as a software application, which is run on a RedHat Linux server or an HP ProCurve ONE Services zl Module. Traffic Sentinel is licensed based on the number of switches monitored. For more than 20 switches, an unlimited license is offered.
• InMon’s annual maintenance program provides product support, plus updates as new software revisions are released. The InMon customer portal is the primary location for support information, where user contributions and customer forums are available as well as support and software downloads.
• Traffic Sentinel is mostly managed through its own web interface, including upgrading the software to new versions.
• Training and consulting is available. Often, customers find this most useful after a period of approximately six months – once the solution is fully integrated into the network, some experience has been gained with it, and further customization or advanced scripting is required.
• Traffic Sentinel is a client-server application, and an internet browser is required for the client. Java is required on the client to view several of the charts.

Sun Java runtime and plugin is a requirement for non-MS IE browsers.

Warning: You do not need to uninstall the Traffic Sentinel image. If the image is uninstalled, all of Traffic Sentinel's databases and settings will be lost.
