Isbank, Turkey’s first national bank, is a company of truly global proportions, accounting for nearly ten per cent of the market value of the Istanbul Stock Exchange. Among the bank’s many innovations in recent years has been the deployment of advanced technology to support real-time transactions and maintain uniformity of services across a network of more than 850 branches and 2,500 ATMs.

Technology leadership demands a state-of-the-art networking infrastructure. Recently, Isbank decided to migrate its headquarters’ LAN from ATM to Gigabit Ethernet technology. In doing so, it aimed to enhance the bandwidth, performance and availability for the 2,400 end-users connected to this network.

"Our aim was to build a flexible, scalable, robust networking infrastructure with sufficient redundancy to ensure it stayed up-and-running all the time," said Aydemir Saman, IT group manager.

According to Saman, the choice of ProCurve Networking resulted from the superior price/performance of the switches, combined with a successful track record of using ProCurve technology in the branches. The ProCurve solution was supplied and implemented by Data Market, a Turkish HP partner. At the core of its network, Isbank has 13 ProCurve 5308xl switches in a meshed topology on eight nodes, each of which incorporates redundancy. ProCurve 2650 switches have been installed at the edge. ProCurve Manager Plus is used to manage the network.

Continuous improvement

According to Saman, the new network architecture has met all Isbank’s expectations of improved capacity and performance. Video streaming, for instance, was problematic in the past but now works without a hitch. Similarly, VoIP performance is greatly improved,enabling the bank’s call centre agents to be more productive.

Network reliability and availability have also increased significantly, while network management is now much more straightforward. Taken together, these improvements lead to time savings and, ultimately, to enhanced levels of customer service because customer-facing staff can work more efficiently and effectively.

Looking ahead, Isbank is confident that it has a networking platform for the future, with new firmware upgrades available free of charge and all products covered by ProCurve’s unique lifetime warranty. According to Saman, future growth will be easier and less costly than it would be with a traditional core network.
